There is was again: the 100 Thing challenge. I’d heard of it a few times before. The idea is to scale down your stuff to just one hundred items.
It was a nice thought. I would love to be able to live that simply one day. But today is not that day. But it did get me to thinking. How many things are in just my closet?
I opened my closet door. I started counting hangers. Then I added to that the folded sweaters and jeans on my shelves. One hundred twelve items. I laughed. Live a life with one hundred things? I had more than that in my closet alone.
I shut off the light, closed the door, and climbed back into bed to read some more. I opened Tammy Strobel’s new book on simplifying your life – You Can Buy Happiness – And It’s Cheap.
What did I find? Another numbers challenge This one is called Project 333. I’d never heard of it. I made a note to google it and kept reading, but I couldn’t get it out of my mind.
Here’s how it works: Choose 33 items you will wear for the next three months. Pack everything else up and put it in storage. In three months time, you can open your stored items and start all over again choosing a new thirty-three piece wardrobe.
Here’s the nice thing about both of these challenges: you can modify them to fit your needs. They’re not meant to drive you nuts, but to inspire you to think about how much you really need and challenge yourself a little.
Could I do this? Well, I was inspired to try. So back to my closet I went to see if I could live with thirty-three items for the next three months….
